In 1991 and barely 2 years after graduating Taru Lahti designed the Ghia Ford Focus for the 1992 Turin Motor Show. One of the most inspirational car designs, Taru’s design language was never correctly adopted by Ford (Ford Taurus), but to this day and 20 years on, it remains new and refreshing.
When the Ghia Ford Focus was presented Giorgio Giugiaro on seeing it said “ It is not a car it is a piece of art”.
A colossal job, Taru designed not only the exterior of the Ghia Ford Focus, but also the interior with the same incredible attention to detail.
On Taru Lahti‘s personal web site are images of his notebook pages from the time in which he designed the Ghia Ford Focus. An interesting collage of taped Polaroid images and a few insightful and profound entries, including reminders to faxed design drawings (before email) and some of his personal design conflicts as a creative working under corporate restraints.
One week after the debut of the Focus, Taru left Ford.
